UK in Portugal
The UK’s alliance with Portugal is older than any other and began with a Treaty in 1373. The "oldest alliance" operates in new times as well. Over 2m British tourists visit Portugal every year and around 80,000 British nationals are part-time or permanent residents. There are an estimated 300,000 Portuguese nationals living and working in the UK. In 2008 UK exports to Portugal totalled £1.6b, and UK imports from Portugal totalled £1.7b. Lisbon's Consular Section has recently installed an ATM machine. The first user was a translator who allowed to take a photo of the event.
In a recent visit to Portugal, Sir Jonathon Porritt, Co-Founder of Forum for the Future and a leading UK expert and writer on sustainable development, was the guest speaker at a dinner debate at the Ambassador's Residence around the theme of Climate Change and Competitiveness.
