Lisbon travel advice

The travel advice on this page is for Lisbon. For the latest general travel advice for Portugal, please see FCO travel advice.

Crime

  • in Lisbon, you should take particular care with pick pockets and petty thieves in the Bairro Alto and Alfama districts. Remain especially vigilant on the number 28 and 16 trams to/from St George's Castle and Belem and the underground where thieves, working in groups, often target tourists

  • pickpockets are similarly at work in Cascais, particularly at the Guincho beach

  • during the months of July and August, groups of thieves in the Lisbon area were reported to have been damaging tyres, especially those of hire cars, and stealing personal belongings whilst the driver stopped to change the tyre. If you are approached by anybody alerting you that you have a puncture, do not stop. Lock the car doors and call the car hire company for assistance.
